From our news story:
Students walked out of schools across the country on March 14, but five Louisa County High School students wanted to honor the memories of the 17 students killed on Valentine’s Day at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in a different way.
Rather than staging a walkout, a group of five classmates in Carrie Hicks’ newspaper class decided they wanted to take it a step beyond and do something that could elevate awareness of school violence and promote school safety.
“We hope that we can definitely unify people in a better way and spread a positive message when there’s so much hate and violence going on currently,” freshman Ben Perkinson said.
Juniors Hayden Bunting and Emily Weddle sat down with Lee Downey, the school’s principal, to discuss what they wanted to do and ways they could support the cause. They thought about ways they could make a bigger impact, by doing something that could help others while reaching a broader audience.
