Heads up for a Cure

Heads Up for a Cure is gearing up to participate for its third annual walk to raise money for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrigs Disease.

Mark Richardson was an inspiration to his family and friends while battling ALS. This year’s goal of $20,000 was set by Richardson and his niece Sharon Payne-Wyant in March. He succumbed to the disease in August.

Mark Richardson was an inspiration to his family and friends while battling ALS. This year’s goal of $20,000 was set by Richardson and his niece Sharon Payne-Wyant in March. He succumbed to the disease in August.

The team, comprised of family, friends and classmates of Mark Richardson, a former Louisa County High School athletic standout who lost his life to the disease at the age of 48 on Aug. 14, was established in his honor to raise money to find a cure.

“I want to make Mark proud with a  large showing,” Richardson’s niece, Sharon Payne-Wyatt said. “We want as many people there to raise awareness and funds to find a cure so no one else has to go through this.”

In 2011, the team raised $16,393 and raised $17,553 in 2012, generating $33,956 to date for the cause.  In March, Payne-Wyatt and Richaπrdson set this year’s goal for Heads Up for a Cure team members at $20,000.

The walk is hosted annually by the ALS Association-DC/MD/VA Chapter as part of the chapter’s annual Richmond Walk to Defeats ALS and will be held at Brown’s Island in Richmond on Saturday, Oct. 26.

This fun and inspirational three-mile outdoor walk helps fund cutting-edge research and programs for families impacted by ALS, a progressive neruo-degenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.

Team members will have a table set up at the Louisa County High School Alumni Football game at 7 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 12 at Fluvanna County High School where those who want to donate, learn more or sign up to join the walk can register.

The chapter’s goal in 2013 is to raise $225,000 at the event. Walker check-in will begin at 10 a.m. at Brown’s Island.  A short program and the event kickoff will start at 11 a.m. An awards celebration will be held following the walk.
