The Santa Council of Louisa County is marking its 25th anniversary honoring one of its founding members, Hilda Duerson Miller, who died last November, and a stalwart volunteer, Ernie Thacker, who died earlier this year.
“Hilda was a visionary in forming the Santa Council by pulling together representatives from various organizations in the community all those years ago,” said President Linda Boxley. “Her efforts have continued to help hundreds of families each year. And Ernie was instrumental in our delivery portion of the program including coordinating the remaining boxes with Louisa Baptist Church at the conclusion of our process.”
With Christmas just two months away, the organization is in full swing for this year’s efforts with several activities currently underway in preparation for distribution in December.
Applications for assistance are due no later than Nov. 15 to be considered and are available at the Louisa County Department of Human Services offices, Monticello Area Community Action Agency, Louisa County Resource Council and Jefferson Area Board for the Aging. Applications can also be obtained by calling (540) 894-0663.
Financial assistance is also necessary to assist the organization with meeting its goal of $35,000 to provide the food, toys and clothing that are given to each family.
Checks made payable to Santa Council of Louisa County can be mailed to P.O. Box 392, Louisa, Va., 23093, Attn: treasurer. Another way to assist the Santa Council is to participate in one of several fund raisers that are being conducted by the group.
“We realize that times are tight and are looking at ways to supplement our donations with other fund raisers and activities,” Boxley said. “We encourage everyone to help us help the less fortunate by participating in one of the events. Every dollar is appreciated.”
