By a unanimous vote during their monthly meeting on Monday, Jan. 13 , Mineral Town Council members elected to purchase new uniforms for town employees that they feel will improve morale, increase professionalism and save dollars.

Town Manager Sal Luciano drew up the proposal for the change in attire. Currently, town employees wear uniforms that are rented from the clothing company Cintas. The package includes 11 shirts and 11 pants that are cleaned by the company every six weeks. In total, the arrangement costs the town $1,515 annually.

Luciano’s proposal involves purchasing uniforms from the local business Custom Designs, which can be specifically tailored to the size specifications of employees. The move, which Luciano reported would cost $1,175 annually, would include the basic shirt and pants combination currently offered, while also including sweatshirts, caps and winter-style clothing.

Luciano said the idea for the change originated from conversations he had with town employees as well as his own distaste for the current uniforms, which do not include any mention of the town of Mineral on them. It’s a lack of labeling that Luciano found discrediting to the town itself.

“We’re spending all this money and I don’t think [our employees] look very appropriate to be around town,” Luciano said. “I don’t think people know they work for the town unless they know them personally. Me personally, I think any company employee needs to wear something with some sort of logo on it.”
