In today’s economy, many families are looking for ways to stretch their budget. For some, that includes raising backyard chickens to obtain fresh eggs and sometimes meat for the table.

One local family is using chickens not only for their eggs, but for educational purposes as well. Julie and Joe Capozella and their children have been raising chickens since 2012.

“I was on a farm my whole life and then Joe and I decided to build a house here,” Capozella said. “It was just the first animal we wanted to include.”

The Capozella children, Jacob, Evan, Issac and Nathan, originally sold the eggs in their business, enabling them to save money to reach certain goals established for themselves.

“They will sell at school, church and to friends, and they have gone to the market,” Capozella said.

Her favorite part of raising chickens is the educational aspect of learning about the process of the chicken.

“God made them so unique,” Capozella said. “There are so many things that people don’t know about them, like you don’t need a rooster to have eggs.”

Capozella leads the 4-H Cloverbuds program and loves educating the kids.

“I am incubating some eggs and I have a whole batch at Moss-Nuckols school in the first grade class,” Capozella said. “It is my second year of doing it there, teaching the kids, educating them about farm animals and how they are created.”
