In a race to win a pizza party, the Shining Star Pre-School class at the Betty Queen Intergenerational Center competed in a “Pennies for Pizza” contest in April and raised more than $431 for the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit.

Lt. Patrick Sheridan and his K-9 partner, bloodhound Rizzo, were invited to the center on Friday, May 9, to accept the funds raised by the children.

“Let me start off by saying thank you very much,” Sheridan said to the children and adults in attendance.

Lynne Gramling, director of the preschool, said the teachers came up with the idea from a previous visit by Sheridan and Rizzo and decorated two large containers for the children to place their coins in. One was pink and purple for the younger class (ages 2 and 3) and blue for the older class (ages 4 and 5).

Gramling said the children wanted to help with the purchase of food, treats and other incidentals for the canines, so they decided to have the classes compete for a pizza party.

“They got very involved, but the competition came out in the parents as well,” Gramling said.

The older class won the competition, but only by $20, so everyone got to participate in the pizza party. Other goodies were also given to both classes for the great effort in raising so much money, Gramling said.

Gramling expressed gratitude to the seniors at the center and community center, who also got into the action, helping the little ones with contributions.
