Most young female athletes in Louisa spend their days dreaming of becoming the next great batter on the diamond, a dominant scorer on the hardwood or maybe even a commanding midfielder on the soccer field.

Camp instructors Kelsey Stanley (l to r) and Kate Chisholm, both former LCHS players, hold up the brand new equipment that will be used at the camp.

The sport of field hockey hasn’t invaded those dreams yet though, mostly due to people’s unfamiliarity with the game.

Kate Chisholm and Kelsey Stanley – two former stars for Louisa County High School’s field hockey program – are looking to change that.

Recently, the two secured a grant from the national USA Field Hockey “FUNdamental” initiative, beating out various other counties across the state for the honor. Now armed with equipment including sticks, balls and nets that were provided at no charge, courtesy of the grant, Chisholm and Stanley are preparing to host a three-day field hockey camp at Louisa County Middle School starting on July 16.

“Slowly, we’re getting more recognition,” Chisholm said, beaming with pride as she held one of the brand new sticks.

This summer marks the second year that Louisa has held a field hockey camp, with Chisholm and Stanley being the lead instructors both times. As accomplished athletes – Chisholm played the sport for five years at LCHS while Stanley is the state’s all-time saves leader with 405 – both girls are looking to introduce young athletes to a game that many often hear about too late.

“Softball and baseball both have little leagues, so they start as peewee players,” Stanley said. “By the time they get to high school, they are awesome and colleges are looking to recruit them. For field hockey, you’re starting in the eighth grade on the JV team.”
