A year ago, Lions volleyball coach Joel Abe was a juggler. Along with preparing to lead the volleyball program into what turned out to be a resurgent season, Abe was also trying to lure recruits for the boy’s soccer team, which he also coached.

Something had to give, and one year later, Abe is a coach who has cut out the extracurricular activities. Stepping down from his position as head coach of the soccer team in June after a nine-year stint, Abe seemed rejuvenated as volleyball practices began last week.

“My focus will be about the same as last year, but I won’t be worrying about what’s going to be happening in two months as much,” Abe said.

Abe’s decision to focus solely on volleyball couldn’t have come at a more critical time. Though he served as an assistant for the team for 10 years, last season was his first as head coach. In one season, he took a team that had just two wins and no conference victories in 2012 and led them to a 9-11 campaign in 2013.
