Mabel W. Berry 

Mabel W. Berry, 99, formerly of Richmond, passed away on August 20, 2014 in Florida.

She was the widow of Robert Lewis Berry.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Viola Pollard and Margaret Harris and three brothers, Henry Wood, Norman Wood and Roy Wood.

Mabel is survived by three children, Charlotte Rochelle Gammon, H. Stirling Mann and Bobby Wayne Berry; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and her sister, Evelyn Mews.

Funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30 at Woodward Funeral Home Louisa.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Charlottesville.

Linda A. Christmas

Linda Ann Christmas, 45, of Louisa, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014 at University of Virginian Hospital, Charlottesville.

She was born Sept. 27, 1968 in Charlottesville. A graduate of Louisa County High School, she worked as an office clerk for Lowes in Zion Crossroads.

She is survived by her mother, Merry Christmas of Louisa; a daughter, Alexyss Gough of Louisa; and her brother, Mark Christmas and his wife, Christine, of Las Vegas, Nevada.

Funeral services, conducted by Michael Crawley, will take place at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28 at Foster Creek Baptist Church. Interment will follow in the Christmas Family Cemetery, Evergreen Rd., Louisa.

Donna T. Goodwin

Donna Lynn Trumpower Goodwin, 56, of Louisa, passed away on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Roanoke.

Born April 30, 1958, she was a daughter of the late Donald Richard Trumpower and Betty Jo Lawson Trumpower, of Fairfax. She is also preceded in death by a son, Joseph Lee Goodwin.

She is survived by the father of her children, Doran Franklin Goodwin of Louisa; a son, Richard Franklin Goodwin and his wife, Nikki, of Roanoke; her granddaughter, Adalee Goodwin of Roanoke; her stepbrother, Dickie Rue and his wife, Ingrid, of Alaska; her sisters, Polly Caylor and her husband, Ron, of Montross, Laura Waldorf of Berryville and Patti Boyd Trumpower of Ocala, Florida; and numerous other relatives and friends.

A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Hillcrest Cemetery, Louisa.

Billie J. Guilford

Billie Jean Guilford, of Louisa, passed away on Tuesday, August 19, 2014.

She leaves behind her beloved children, Linda Hultgren, Richard Guilford and Robin Musser, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30 at New Life Community Church, 509 East Main Street, Louisa.

Joseph F. Lloyd 

Joseph Francis “Joe” Lloyd, 49, of Amherst, passed away Sunday, August 24, 2014.  He was the loving husband of Temby Peters Lloyd.

Born on November 5, 1964 in Mexico, he was the cherished son of Julie Dawson Lloyd and the late Robert “Red” Lloyd of Richmond and Jose Martinez Bocanegra of Phoenix, Arizona.

Joe was a fun-loving, hard-working, and kind-hearted man.  He enjoyed hunting, horses and dirt bike racing.

Joe was preceded in death by his dad, Robert Eugene “Red” Lloyd.

In addition to his mother and father, he is survived by his wife, Temby; son, Joseph Paul “Ryan” Lloyd; sister, Carmen Martinez Bocanegra Dickey and her husband, Curt, of Richmond; brothers, James Dawson Lloyd and his wife, Tracey, of Hanover, Robert E. Lloyd Jr. and his wife, Shannon, of Bumpass, and John William Lloyd and his wife, Jamie, of Bumpass; special cousin, Dwayne Lloyd and his wife, Connie, of Gordonsville; brothers-in-law and best friend, Ricky Peters and his wife, Brenda, and Roger Peters; sister-in-law, Dawn Peters and her husband, Josh Brown; mother and father-in-law, Paul and Betty Peters; special VCHSS family; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

A funeral service, conducted by Stewart Jones, will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28 at The Emmanuel Church of the Nazarene, 401 Dixie Airport Rd., Madison Heights. Interment will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30 at Gammon Lloyd Family Cemetery in Bumpass.

The family will receive friends at other times at the residence of Paul and Betty Peters, 183 Shearingham Dr., Madison Heights, VA 24572.

William M. Mason 

Deacon William McKinley Mason departed this life on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville.

The son of the late Joseph and Erlener Wright Mason was born in Louisa on Sept. 21, 1949.

Following the Christian devotion and leadership of his parents, William professed his  acceptance of the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and joined First Baptist Church of Louisa. There he attended Sunday school, church worship services regularly, and sang with the youth, adult and men’s chorus respectively. He served as a superintendent of Sunday school. In later years, he united with Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church, Charlottesville, where he continued to faithfully be a servant of the Lord. He served as a Sunday school teacher and was ordained as a deacon of the Diaconate Ministry.

William received his formal education at the A.G. Richardson High School and the Louisa County High School. He matriculated at Virginia State University in Petersburg and received his bachelor of science degree in accounting in 1972. He was employed by the Monticello Community Action Agency, the Charlottesville Public School System and University of Virginia until his retirement.

William was the Past Master of the Louisa/Temple Lodge #113. He attended the JABA Center and participated in activities there until his health no longer permitted.

William met his best friend and love of his life at the Monticello Area Community Action Agency, Jewel Coleman. They were wed on Aug. 12, 1977. This union lasted 37 years until his death. Their love, respect and favor for the life they created together was shared with a son and a daughter.

William is survived by his wife, Jewel Coleman Mason of Keswick; one son, André William Mason (Rhonda) of Mechanicsville; his daughter, Janelle Crystal Mason of Norfolk; one grandchild, Olivia Lauren Mason; one god son, Kirk Jamal Thomasson of Hampton; two sisters, JoAnn Mason Thomasson (James) of Hampton, Cassandra Mason Richardson (Lewis) of Goose Creek, South Carolina; one brother/uncle, Robert Stephen Wright (Louise) of Louisa; nine aunts, Julia Wright Johnson, Daphne Wright Johnson (Lenwood), Pearlena Thurston, Lottie Willis (Tucker), Alma Mason, Azeta Wren, Vernell Nuckols, Clienth Graves (Ernest Sr.) and Madeline Mickens (Gordon); six uncles, Carl Wright, Russell Stewart (Mary), Walter Young, Morris Johnson, Kenneth Johnson (Eevone), and Julian Johnson; a mother-in-law, Wilma Johnson Coleman; two sisters-in-law, Theresa and Whitney Coleman and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Jones, were held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 25 at First Baptist Church of Louisa. The Rev. Dr. Alvin Edwards, pastor of Mt. Zion First African Baptist Church of Charlottesville, delivered the eulogy.

The pall bearers were Alford “Az” Johnson, Stephen Johnson Sr., Gary Johnson, Matthew Stewart, Dale Johnson and Connell Gains.

Interment was in the church cemetery with full Masonic rites.

Joyce P. Richardson 

Joyce Perkins Richardson, 80, of Louisa, passed away peacefully August 20, 2014 in Alabama.

Joyce was predeceased by her husband, James Daniel Richardson; her son, Mark Richardson; and grandson, Andy Richardson, as well as many other beloved extended family members.

Joyce is survived by her son, Danny Richardson (Kate); her daughter, Judy Mills; her son, Michael Richardson (Deb); her daughter-in-law, Cindy Richardson; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Joyce was a blessing to the Louisa community for many years, serving her community as deputy treasurer of the county for 21 years, as well as treasurer of Macedonia United Methodist Church for more than 20 years.

In addition to other volunteer activities, Joyce was active in AARP and the Lunch Buddy program in the local elementary school.  Joyce will be remembered not only for her steadfast commitment to her family and friends, but also for her strong Christian values and faith, which enabled her to serve others so selflessly throughout her lifetime.

A funeral service, conducted by Pastor Steve Hall, was held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, August 26 at Woodward Funeral Home. A graveside service followed at Macedonia United Methodist Church, Louisa.

Clarence L. Shelton 

Clarence Leroy Shelton, 74, passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, August 22, 2014.

Leroy was born June 23, 1940 to the late Lewis Shelton and Alice Johnson Shelton of Kents Store. Leroy is preceded in death by his two brothers, Marvin (Bessie) Shelton, and Lewis “June” Robert Shelton Jr.; and one sister, Gertrude Bishop.

Leroy was a union worker for First Class Carpenter’s

Union. He was licensed in carpentry, concrete form and skyscraper: He was “Master of all Trades.”

Leroy leaves to cherish his precious memories, his wife, Virgie Shelton, Envoy at the Meadows, Goochland; three sons, Elmoe Valentino Shelton, of Kents Store (Gwendolyn Gibson of Waynesboro), Antonio “Van” (Janice) Shelton Sr., of Bremo Bluff, Clarence “Precious” (Bessie) Fortune of Maidens; nine grandchildren, Jessica Gibson, Kendra Shelton, Kayla Shelton, Shontey Williams, Antonio Shelton Jr., Diamond Shelton, Chelsea Shelton, Tzeira  “Ashley” Fortune and “C.J.” Fortune; four great-great grandchildren, (plus expecting one), and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.

Funeral services, conducted by Lawrence Henson, will be held at noon Saturday, Aug. 30 at Thomasson Watson Funeral Chapel, 117 West Street, Louisa. There will not be a wake, interment or repass.

Frederick A. Spain Sr.

Frederick A. Spain Sr., 70, formerly of Louisa County, passed away on Tuesday, August 26, 2014 in Henrico County.

He was a senior trooper with the Virginia State Police for 20 years, a member of the American Legion Post #244 Glen Allen, and the AF&AM Masonic Lodge #131 Glen Allen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Maude Spain; and a brother, Kenneth B. Spain.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Walker Spain; two sons, Frederick A. Spain Jr. and his wife, Tracy, of Henrico, Mark C. Spain and his wife, Angie, of Sandston; one daughter, Sheila Graziano and her husband, Phillip, of Glen Allen; two brothers, Jimmy Spain of Glen Allen and Jerry Spain and his wife, Frances, of Rockville; three sisters, Jean Glass and her husband, Charles, of Louisa, Mary Jane Hix and her husband, Danny,  and Linda Proffitt and her husband, Norman, both of Goochland; nine grandchildren, Cody Spain, Philip Graziano, Josh Graziano, Nathan Spain, Hannah Spain, Sierra Spain, Alexa Spain, Mary Graziano and Jeffery Hill; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. on  Thursday, Aug. 28 at Woodward Funeral Home, Louisa.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 29 at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, 4768 Shannon Hill Road, Colombia.
