Gail Martin, an extraordinary volunteer who served around Lake Anna and Louisa County, was born on April 7 and died on Dec. 23.  In honor of her birthday, those who live on in the spirit of volunteerism are invited to celebrate the first ever Gail Martin Volunteer Day.

Gail was passionate about so many things, but animals were near the top of the list.  So her family has invited all who were ever helped by Gail to spend a few hours helping animals in her name.

St. Rocco’s Hound Rescue welcomes assistance walking and socializing dogs.  On April 7, beginning at 2 p.m. at their facility off Byrd Mill Road, volunteers are welcome to visit hounds that have been rescued from the Louisa County Shelter.  Good Samaritans may contact Nora Duell at (540) 223-6878 for more information.

SNAP (Spay Neuter All Pets), Love For Animals, Louisa Humane Society and the Louisa County Shelter are other organizations in need of donations of money or supplies.   Volunteers of Louisa will be collecting donated items during business hours on weekdays at the Betty Queen Center.  Contact VOL at (540) 967-6095 for more information.

Donations may be designated for an organization or will be distributed according to need.  In addition to money, these organizations welcome new or used items including pet crates, duct tape, black Sharpie markers, cleaning supplies, laundered towels, and unopened pet food.

Gail’s daughter, Tammy Thurmon, wrote, “Mom gave of herself every day in every way.”  The Martin family invites you to celebrate Gail’s birthday in her memory on April 7.
