Odyssey of the Mind is a problem-solving educational competition program that challenges students from kindergarten through college. One local team has run much of that course together.
After six years of competing, the Louisa County High School team known as Odyssey Angels has advanced to the state contest this weekend in Norfolk after winning first place in the divisional competition held here in Louisa in March.
Damia Browder, a Thomas Jefferson Elementary School teacher, has been working with the group since they were fourth-graders.
“This group is great, the way we have come together,” said Stephen Payne, a six-year member of the group. “We are a very creative group and we work well together.”
The team will create and present a performance where a group of students travel throughout one or more team-created places where they encounter negative situations. These “Odyssey Angels” change what they find and turn them into positive situations.
“We usually just make it to the local level. Last year, we got second place,” said Sami Watson, who has been with the team since third grade. “This year we get to have the state experience.”
The group meets to practice on a regular basis at the Grand Beginnings Private Day Care Center, a preschool located in Louisa run by Beth Grandstaff.
