Taylor Badgett was born on the Fourth of July, when we celebrate America’s freedom and our rights.

That includes the right to bear arms…in the backyard.

According to Shirely Badgett, the family tradition on the fourth is to have dinner, then shift gears into celebrating her granddaughter’s birthday with cake and ice cream, followed by presents.

Taylor’s 12th birthday party with the family was in full swing when they noticed an univited guest.

As they were preapring for the cake and ice cream, Shirley’s grandson Brandon spotted a bear in the backyard.

“I told him it wasn’t a day for joking,” Shirley recalled, but she realized it was no laughing matter when she looked out the window for herself.

The family gathered in awe and the more than 250-pound animal.  After the black bear milled about for a few minutes, it crossed the street from their Trevilians home and went on his way. But his visit lingered for the rest of the party.

“It brightened the day,” Shirely said, adding that in their excitement about the bear, they forgot about the presents for almost an hour.

When they got back to the party, Taylor’s gifts included gift cards and money–no teddy bears

Taylor and Brandon, 13, are the children of locals Michael and Christina Badgett, of Louisa County.
