Continued aftershocks in Louisa startle some, others sleep

It’s not over. But it’s definitely getting better.

A 2.4-magnitude aftershock rolled through Louisa County shortly after midnight on July 31.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the tremor was centered near Hall’s Store Rd., further east than the majority of the epicenters, but still well within the geographic range of  the pattern, as displayed on the county’s aftershock map, accessible at www.louisacounty.com

Although Louisa experienced numerous aftershocks in the months after August 23, their frequency and intensity has decreased dramatically over time.

Of the 82 tremors Louisa has experienced, 41 of them were recorded in the 48 days from August 23 to October 9.

In the almost 10 months since then, another 41 have been recorded, and they have been less powerful than the earlier quakes.

Since October, only two have been recorded at a Richter-scale magnitude of 3.0 or greater.
