During the North American Finals meet, Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis posed with Louisa Middle School’s 4x100m relay team of Brandy Brown (l to r), Kavia Terry, Tori Finn and Kianna Richardson.
For what is thought to be only the second time in Louisa County Athletic history, young athletes from Louisa were finalists in the Hershey’s Track and Field Games North American Finals.
Kianna Richardson, Kavia Terry, Tori Finn and Brandy Brown–all members of Louisa County Middle School’s 4X100 relay team–had won the district, region and Virginia state titles. Based on their performance in the 4x100m event, they were chosen to represent the Southeast Region-comprised of nine states–Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, Kentucky and Virginia.
The 35th Annual Hershey’s North American Final Meet was held August 2 through August 5 at Henry Hershey Field located at Milton Hershey School, in Hershey Pennsylvania.
Approximately 450 young people between the ages of nine to 14 came from all 50 states, all of Canada and Puerto Rico. In addition to participation in the event, they were treated to life at Elizabethtown College, fun at Hershey Park Amusement Complex and chocolate at the Hershey’s Chocolate World Attraction.
Also on hand were Olympic Gold Medal winners Rafer Johnson and Carl Lewis. Johnson was the 1960 Olympic Decathlon Gold Medal winner and went on to be the 1960 Track & Field Athlete of the Year Award and Sullivan Award winner. Lewis is a nine-time Gold Medal winner, earning 10 total medals in his five Olympic appearances.
Brandy Brown also was eligible to run in the 100m dash, but because of meet rules could only participate in one event. Three of the four young ladies will be eligible to try to return next year as they had the youngest 4x100m team.
