Tree lighting at Lake Anna on Saturday
Employees from Rappahannock Electric Cooperative help with the task of decorating the tree.
Despite the chilly temperatures on Saturday, volunteers converged on the area of the Route 208 Bridge to get ready for the second annual Lake is Great Christmas Tree Lighting, which will be held on Saturday, December 1 starting at 5:30 p.m.
On Saturday, volunteers arrived at the Lake Anna Visitors Center to wrap large donated boxes to be used as decorations for the area. The boxes were provided by members of the community for the event.
Donnie Brooks and Scott Orris from Rappahannock Electric Cooperative arrived on Sunday to help decorate Lake Anna’s large Christmas tree, which was provided by Belmont Christmas Tree Farm in Spotsylvania. Rappahannock Electric Cooperative is not only a sponsor, some of their employees also devoted their Sunday afternoon to cover the large tree with lights and ornaments using one of the REC trucks to easily access the highest spots on the tree.
The second Annual Lake is Great Christmas Tree Lighting will be held on Saturday, December 1 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. beside the Lake is Great Store at 2991 New Bridge Road at Lake Anna. Last year, the inaugural event was enjoyed by more than 800 guests and even more are expected this year.
Santa will be making his entrance at approximately 6:00 p.m. and will be available to take photos with all of the children that are hoping to tell him their Christmas lists. Children will also be able to write letters to Santa and deposit them in his mail bag. The children’s activity stations will allow the young ones to partake in several activities, including decorating their own ornament for the event, as well as preparing pouches of reindeer food that can be sprinkled outdoors on Christmas Eve.
There will be food vendors of all types, serving treats such as hot chocolate, coffee and eggnog as well as funnel cakes, cotton candy, kettle corn and more. There will also be craft vendors on hand selling lake and holiday themed merchandise, clothing, and goods perfect for Christmas gifts. Performances from local groups will fill the evening with choirs, bands and dance troupes putting together their best holiday numbers for the crowd. The Lake Anna Christmas Tree will be lit between 7:30 and 8:00 and the festivities will continue through the evening.
Volunteers and sponsors are still needed to help complete the night and make sure that everything will be in place on the night of December 1. There is limited parking at the site, so please carpool with friends or family to help the greater cause.
