Turkeys lost in the freezer

Recently, the Santa Council of Louisa County suffered a minor setback when members discovered that a chest freezer that was being used to store donated turkeys had failed.  The 29 turkeys had to be thrown out and replacement poultry purchased from the organization’s coffers, an unexpected expense.

“We have been able to replace the lost meat before distribution,” said Barbara Wilson, Santa Council president. “But, it was a cost we weren’t anticipating and with donations slow in coming this year, it does put a crunch on us.”

As of Monday, approximately $20,000 had been received towards the $35,000 goal with expenses estimated to be around $33,000 this year.

“We have not met our goal in several years,” Wilson said.  “It would be nice to meet the target this year.”

Tax deductible contributions may be mailed to the Santa Council, P.O. Box 392, Louisa, VA 23093, attn. Treasurer.

“Even the smallest amount helps us achieve our goal,” Wilson added.

The volunteer organization was in full swing this week as volunteers packed more than 525 boxes of food Tuesday evening. Volunteers distributed a number of food boxes Thursday and will do so again Saturday morning.

More than 600 families sought assistance from the Santa Council. Families receive a box of food containing a holiday meal and nonperishable items.  Children are given an outfit of clothing as well as an age appropriate toy and books.

Donations are accepted all year long to benefit the organization, which utilizes more than 95 percent of its monies directly serving the less fortunate families.

This is the 24th year the Santa Council of Louisa County has worked to make Christmas brighter for the less fortunate in the community. The organization relies on the community not only for monetary support but for manpower in its efforts, including packing boxes, wrapping packages and delivering items to the shut-ins.

The group has also conducted fundraisers to supplement its coffers, with the most recent one being the commemorative Louisa County High School Christmas ornament.

The pewter ornament is $15 each and available at the Fabric Hut and Gift Gallery in the town of Louisa or at Ye Olde Towne Flower Shoppe in the town of Mineral or by calling Irene at (540) 894-0663 or Barbara at (540) 894-0139.
