Weighing diets against lifestyle changes

Not only was it a turning point, but it was a magical moment, a moment of a lifestyle change.

As Julie Harris of Louisa boarded the plane for a business trip in December 2011, she had that moment when she couldn’t fasten her seatbelt on the plane.

Harris holds up a pair of old jeans keeping them as a reminder. All of her other big clothes have been donated to Goodwill.

“I had been fat all my life. I was overweight. I was bullied. It was time to change,” Harris said.

She walked into Anytime Fitness off of Zion Crossroads feeling intimidated because she had not been to a gym since she was a teenager, but knew she needed to do it.

She signed up with the manager, Dena. With the membership Harris was awarded three free professional sessions with a personal trainer.

Tommy ended up being her personal trainer and Harris realized she needed him.

“I decided I had to do it differently,” Harris said. “I had done it all, I was breaking the dieting and I’m going to ‘livet’ not ‘diet’.”

As she continued to work with her trainer once a week, Harris signed up on the Anytime Fitness website that recorded her activities and nutrition. This taught her that portion control is the key along with staying active.

Harris began living her exercising like it was one of her priorities, like getting up and going to work every day, like breathing, she says.
