The Louisa County Resource Council is battling hunger in Louisa County by implementing their summer backpack program. The program, which is also in place during the school year, is designed to feed students who otherwise may have trouble accessing sufficient food over the summer months.

The backpack program, which began last year and has grown, is a result of a cooperation with Louisa County Public Schools and Feedmore, which was earlier known as The Central Virginia Food Bank.

Every week, the organization provides backpacks of non-perishable food items to income-eligible students at Moss-Nuckols Elementary School and Thomas Jefferson Elementary School.  During the school year, each backpack contains enough food for the child to have six nutritionally balanced meals over the weekend.

Sandy Shenton, coordinator for the program, takes a look at the other factors that affect a student’s household. For instance, most older students won’t admit that they need assistance at home, so Shenton looks at the number of children in the family and tries to make sure that there is enough food to feed all of the children, not just the specific student involved in the backpack program.
