Trial set for alleged sex offender

Joe C. Leake, 36, of Montpelier, pled not guilty when he was arraigned in Louisa County Circuit Court on Aug. 21 for 29 felony charges of child porn, one count of aggravated sexual assault, forcible sodomy of a child younger than 13, indecent liberties, abduction by force and animated object sexual penetration.

Leake, who was a “family acquaintance” of the ten-year-old victim, told the mother he was taking the child on a shopping trip.

Instead, authorities said Leake took the child to his home in Louisa County where the crimes allegedly occurred.

Based on their initial investigation, Louisa County Sheriff’s Office arrested Leake at his home on March 13 and has been held without bond at the Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange.

During the arraignment, Leake chose to have a trial by judge. Defense attorney Stephen Harris requested the court to put the trial off until sometimes in December and told Honorable Judge Timothy K. Sanner that he was willing to sign a waiver of speedy trial.
