Mineral council pays price for raising salaries

Math just hasn’t been friendly to the Mineral Town Council recently.

During the public comments section of the Mineral Town Council meeting on Monday, Aug. 12, Mineral resident Tex Pierce accused council members of illegitimately raising their own salaries.

“Going by what the town charter and Virginia State Code says, the council’s salaries are invalid,” Pierce said.

He was right. According to county records, Mineral Town Council members started receiving a monthly payment of $75, effective July 1. Before the change, members were paid $50. Mayor Pam Harlowe’s salary also increased on the same day, from $75 to $100.

Council member Dr. William Thomas, who heads of the Finance Committee, said he proposed the change after asking Town Clerk Ti-Lea Downing what the maximum yearly salary that council could receive would be.
