Accident claims life of Louisa County middle schooler

On Sunday, Feb. 24, shortly after 2:00 p.m., Virginia State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Rt. 33 that took the life of one 14-year-old middle school student.

According to authorities, Taval Gortman, 18, of Montpelier, was driving a 2002 Acura TL east on Rt. 33. He ran off the left side of the road striking a fence which caused the vehicle to overturn.

The 14-year-old passenger was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene, while the driver suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to VCU Medical Center.

Neither occupant was wearing a seat belt.

Louisa County Sheriff’s Office assisted with traffic control while one traffic lane of Rt. 33 was closed to allow for the investigation which was assisted by the Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team.

According to Virginia State Police Sgt. Thomas Molnar, investigators are continuing their inquiry into the fatal accident.
