Candidate and campaign finance training

Posted on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 10:29 am

In preparation for the 2013 General Election campaign, the State Board of Elections (SBE) has announced Candidate and Campaign Finance Training in March 2013.  SBE will be offering training for candidates on how to get on the ballot and comply with petition laws and regulations.  It will be followed by a seminar on the laws and policies governing campaign finance reporting and compliance.  This training is geared toward candidates, their staff and treasurers as well as treasurers for ALL types of political committees (e.g. PACs, Parties, Referendum).

This is the first time SBE has combined ballot access training with campaign finance training.

“Ballot access and campaign finance laws have grown more complex with new laws being passed each year,” Don Palmer, secretary of the State Board of Elections, said.  “We felt it was time to provide training for candidates that will walk them through what to do once they have decided to run for office to when they decide to close their campaign. It is an added bonus that we are able to train officers of other types of committees as well.  I encourage all potential candidates, staff, and treasurers to participate in this important training.”

The training dates and locations are as follows:

• Fairfax County at the Government Center, March 14

• Radford at the New River Community College, March 21

• Virginia Beach on Princess Anne Rd., 8 a.m. until 1 p.m., March 22

• Virginia Beach on Princess Anne Rd.,2  until 7 p.m., March 22

• Richmond City at the Police Training Academy, March 25

• Charlottesville at the Downtown Mall, March 27

The cost to attend the training is $15 and space is limited.  Reservations will be accepted for each location on a first come, first served basis.  Unless otherwise stated, all classes begin at 8 a.m. and will end by 1 p.m.
