American Legion Post #116 will conduct a Four Chaplains Ceremony at VFW Post #8947, 102 Mineral Avenue, Mineral at 2 p.m. The service is a memorial to the four Army chaplains who represented Methodist, Jewish, Roman Catholic and Dutch Reformed ministries. These four men comforted those aboard the U.S.A.T. Dorchester when it was hit with torpedoes by a German submarine U-223. The order was given to abandon ship and the chaplains opened a storage locker and began distributing life jackets. When there were no more to give out, the four gave the ones they were wearing to four young men. The ship sank and survivors reported seeing the chaplains, arms linked, offering prayers. The public is invited.
