Family Day on the Heritage Farm
Oct 14 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm

Learn “Homesteading” at Family Day on the Heritage Farm from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. with hands-on history. Life on a farm in the fall meant preparing for winter. Learn about harvest feasts, the origin and use of scarecrows, and the evolution of the tradition we now know as Halloween. Activities include open hearth cooking, building a scarecrow for our garden, and participating in household chores including making a mattress. The Sargeant Museum of Louisa County History is located at 214 Fredericksburg Ave., Louisa.

Fall festival

Gum Spring United Methodist Church will hold its fall festival from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. with food, games, pumpkins and more. Proceeds will benefit the youth’s mission trip. The church is located at 191 Cross County Rd., Gum Spring.

Chicken BBQ fundraiser
Oct 14 @ 1:00 pm – 7:00 pm

The Mineral United Methodist Church men’s group will hold its annual chicken barbeque from 1 until 7 p.m. at the church, 301 W. Third St., Mineral, eat in or carry out. Menu consists of one-half chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, roll, dessert and beverage. Meals are $10. Reserve meals by calling Bruce at (540)  854-0088. Proceeds benefit various missions of the church.

Picnic at the Ranch

Back to the Ranch will presents its third annual picnic at the ranch from 1 until 7 p.m. at 914 Fredericks Hall Rd., Bumpass. Activities include live music, ha rides, barrel train rides, food, and Pearl, the miniature horse. Bring a chair. RSVP at (540) 259-1604 so ample food can be prepared.

Belmont Ruritan Club’s Scholarship Fundraising Dinner

The sixth annual Belmont Ruritan Club’s Scholarship Fundraising Dinner will held from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Belmont Community Center, 7124 Belmont Rd., Mineral. Menu includes choice of deep fried haddock filets or chicken cutlets served with fries, a beverage and dessert. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for youth age 12 and younger per dinner. Limited tickets will be available at the door.  Eat-in or take-out window service available. Contact any Ruritan member or call Don Burridge at (540) 273-6679 or John Skelly at (510) 854-7099 for tickets.

Tastings Cookbook Club
Oct 16 @ 5:30 pm

The Tastings Cookbook Club will meet at Louisa County Library, 881 Davis Hwy., Mineral at 5:30 with the theme Comfort Foods. Every month, the group will pick a theme and provide a selection of cookbooks to be checked out. You will be able to select a book and prepare a recipe from that cookbook. The group will then gather to share a potluck meal and our recipes.

American Sign Language Night

Louisa County Library will host American Sign Language Night at 5 p.m. This is a great environment to practice signing skills and learn more about deaf culture. All ages and skill levels are welcome. Refreshments will be provided.

Preschool Read & Rhyme Time is a fun program highlighting early literacy skills. Enjoy short books, rhymes, finger plays, a flannel story, and songs using shakers and rhythm instruments each Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Designed for ages 2 through 5 with an accompanying adult or caregiver. Siblings welcome. The Louisa County Library is located at 881 Davis Hwy., Mineral.

Experience “a day in the life”  of the Frugal Farmstead at the Heritage Farm from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.  Using tips from 19th Century literature such as The Virginia Housewife, costumed interpreters engage visitors in performing daily life skills using tools and techniques of the time period. Seasonal activities may include sewing, spinning, weaving, gardening, cooking, laundry and other household chores. The Heritage Farm is located beside the Sargeant Museum at 214 Fredericksburg Ave., Louisa.
