Preschool Read & Rhyme Time

Preschool Read & Rhyme Time is a fun program highlighting early literacy skills. Enjoy short books, rhymes, finger plays, a flannel story, and songs using shakers and rhythm instruments each Thursday at 10:30 a.m. Designed for ages 2 through 5 with an accompanying adult or caregiver. Louisa Chapter of AARP

The Louisa Chapter of AARP meets at 2 p.m. the second Wednesday of the month, September through May, in the second floor conference room of the Louisa County Office Building. All residents age 50 and older are welcome. Following a program, refreshments are served by member volunteers. AARP meetings and trips are a great way for seniors to meet and socialize with others.

The Golden Age Club, open to all Louisa County seniors age 55 or older, will meet at 10 a.m. in the conference room at the Betty Queen Center for a presentation by the Louisa County Fire & Rescue. Lunch will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Floozie’s Pie Shop (cash only), 109B West Main St., Louisa. If attending lunch, call the Louisa County Parks, Recreation and Tourism office at (540) 967-4420 before 10 a.m. on October 13 to reserve a place.

Fall Harvest Festival
Oct 14 @ 9:00 am – 2:00 pm

Louisa County Parks, Recreation and Tourism will hold its 14th annual Fall Harvest Festival from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Walton Park in Mineral.  The day’s activities include crafts, hayrides, bounceables, children’s activities live entertainment and pony rides. The Mineral Farmers’ Market will be set up at this location for the day. Admission is free. For more information, call (540) 967-4420.

Family Day on the Heritage Farm

Learn “Homesteading” at Family Day on the Heritage Farm from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. with hands-on history. Life on a farm in the fall meant preparing for winter. Learn about harvest feasts, the origin and use of scarecrows, and the evolution of the tradition we now know as Halloween. Activities include open hearth cooking, building a scarecrow for our garden, and participating in household chores including making a mattress. The Sargeant Museum of Louisa County History is located at 214 Fredericksburg Ave., Louisa.

Fall festival

Gum Spring United Methodist Church will hold its fall festival from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. with food, games, pumpkins and more. Proceeds will benefit the youth’s mission trip. The church is located at 191 Cross County Rd., Gum Spring.

Chicken BBQ fundraiser
Oct 14 @ 1:00 pm – 7:00 pm

The Mineral United Methodist Church men’s group will hold its annual chicken barbeque from 1 until 7 p.m. at the church, 301 W. Third St., Mineral, eat in or carry out. Menu consists of one-half chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, roll, dessert and beverage. Meals are $10. Reserve meals by calling Bruce at (540)  854-0088. Proceeds benefit various missions of the church.

Picnic at the Ranch

Back to the Ranch will presents its third annual picnic at the ranch from 1 until 7 p.m. at 914 Fredericks Hall Rd., Bumpass. Activities include live music, ha rides, barrel train rides, food, and Pearl, the miniature horse. Bring a chair. RSVP at (540) 259-1604 so ample food can be prepared.

Belmont Ruritan Club’s Scholarship Fundraising Dinner

The sixth annual Belmont Ruritan Club’s Scholarship Fundraising Dinner will held from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Belmont Community Center, 7124 Belmont Rd., Mineral. Menu includes choice of deep fried haddock filets or chicken cutlets served with fries, a beverage and dessert. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for youth age 12 and younger per dinner. Limited tickets will be available at the door.  Eat-in or take-out window service available.
