Early goose season for the novice

Light Goose hunting, a popular sport in Virginia, is from Oct. 4 - Jan. 31. For more information, consult The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries' website,

Have you ever thought about trying to waterfowl hunt?  Perhaps you second-guessed the notion because you thought you needed a special gun, a blind, boat, calls, decoys, etc. and decided it was too expensive?
My advice to you would be to think again and try the early or resident goose season, because it is perfect for beginners.
“Trying something new with your hunting will help keep you interested and develop new skills,” says Dennis Gayness, a manager with Dance’s Sporting Goods in Colonial Heights that offered some excellent advice for this edition of Virginia Afield.
Gayness has hunted all his life and enjoys the tradition from September to February. He says the early goose season during September with its gentle weather days presents an opportunity for someone to learn how to call geese, place decoys and learn hunting setups and spots without the harsh conditions and special needs for the winter seasons.
