On Jan. 17, Senate Bill 826 which was advocated by Senator Tom Garrett of Louisa was defeated in an eight-to-seven vote in the Committee of Education and Health. The bill would have brought Virginia’s law into agreement with the Federal Hyde Amendment approved by Congress in 1976 that ensured that abortions would not be funded at taxpayers’ expense.
“Opponents have argued that this bill would deny access. That is simply not true. When did the meaning of access become something paid for at taxpayer expense?” Garrett asked. “Any one woman would remain free to abort her child, only not at taxpayer expense.”
Garrett said according to their own data, Planned Parenthood had over $240 million in profits in the last two years.
“Let Planned Parenthood pay to terminate these pregnancies with this money. The taxpayer shouldn’t be forced to foot this bill,” Garrett said.
The bill was part of a common objective to reduce or eliminate conflicting and confusing layers of bureaucracy, with consistency in the legislation being the main goal.
