Those who have been touched by cancer in some way know first-hand how important it is to raise funds for research to, hopefully, one day eradicate this disease.
That’s why it is so heartening to see the many dedicated folks who participate in Relay For Life of Louisa each year. While participation has declined over the years, there are many familiar faces who work hard each year to raise money for this cause.
The 10th annual Relay For Life of Louisa has raised more than $43,000 this year toward its goal of $50,000. They have until August 31 to reach their goal. Knowing the big hearts in this community and generosity of so many, there’s no doubt they will reach it.
At the event, which began with the Survivors’ Walk, many familiar faces were present, along with the new warriors who have fought their own private battle with the disease.
As the survivors began their first lap, attendees surrounded the track clapping as they showed their support for these brave fighters. During the second lap around the track, caregivers joined the survivors and the teams began their walk during the third lap.
There were hugs, tears and smiles galore during the event from those that attended, especially during the speech given by 12-year-old cancer survivor and 2013 honorary chairperson, Mariah Dulaney, who spoke passionately about her desire to have everyone beat the disease.
Cancer doesn’t discriminate—it affects old, young, rich, poor, black, white. Treatments for some forms of cancer have come a long way, but there are others that need much more work. It takes money, lots of research and long clinical trial periods before a new drug can be dispensed to patients.
It would be a wonderful day if we could find a cure before any more loved ones—daughters, sons, mothers, fathers, husbands, wives or grandparents—are diagnosed with cancer.
If you want to contribute, visit relayforlife.org/louisava, or call any ream member. They will be glad to include your donation to the total count. Let’s each do our part to help Relay For Life of Louisa reach it’s goal this year!
