Louisa field hockey gets first win of the season

When Louisa’s varsity field hockey program began in 2009, it took the Lions three years to record their first victory.

This season, the feet took just three games.

Louisa shut out the visiting Caroline Cavaliers 3-0 in their matchup on Thursday, Sept. 5.

“I really can’t take any credit for this,” coach Meredith Marconi said. “This was all them.  The girls came out hard today, and they worked their tails off.”

Every time Louisa made a move offensively, it seemed that senior midfielder Skylar Reed was involved.  Reed contributed the first two goals of the game, scoring at the 18- and 14-minute marks of the first half.

Though the team led 2-0 at halftime, Marconi implored her team to treat the remaining half as if the score was tied up.

Her team heeded the call. This time, Reed recorded the assist, setting up senior forward Avery Hudson for the goal with a finesse pass with 17:50 remaining in the second half.

Strong passing was a key factor in the Lions’ win, and Marconi took notice.

“[Senior forward] Kayla DeNapoli and [senior forward] Adriana Sprouse had some great passing on the wings,” Marconi said.
