10/11 Year Olds
Louisa Little League’s All-Star team dominated the Virginia District 14 tournament on their way to winning their third straight district title.
The team, coached by Dicky Purcell, won all six of their playoff games and outscored opponents at a staggering rate. The team scored 80 runs while only allowing 10. The team clinched the title by defeating Monticello 20-2 and 8-3, the latter game being the only contest in which Louisa failed to mercy rule to opposing team.
“I want my teams to think baseball,” Purcell said. “I think that’s so important. The little league team I coached this year just exemplified that. They could see people not covering bases and take the extra base.”
The playoff run was the continuation of the team’s hot play near the end of the season, where the team won 14 of their last fifteen games.
The team will now head to Springfield on Wednesday, July 17, for the state playoffs.
Junior League Baseball
The Louisa Junior League baseball team will head to Bristol for this first state playoff game on Thursday, July 18.
The team is composed of all-stars from throughout the league and has been practicing together for the past few weeks.
“Everybody is just excited,” said the team’s manager, Stephen Frankart. “We just want to get down there and start playing.”
Senior League Baseball
Louisa’s Senior League baseball team won all three of their tournament games to advance to the state tournament in Pound, Va., on Thursday, July 11.
The team dominated East Orange 13-3 and then defeated Culpeper twice, 6-1 and 4-2, to clinch the title.
“This team is a bunch of kids that are good friends and have played ball together since they were kids,” manager Mark Alberts said. “They’re familiar with each other. It’s a good bunch of kids.”
As for the upcoming tournament, Alberts said the team’s hot performance in the playoffs has given the team momentum and put them in the right mindset.
“The kids are hyped up,” Alberts said. “We’re cautiously optimistic we’re going to go far.”
