It took years of dedicated research for Matthew Lewis to find his father, Leo, who now resides in Indiana.

When Matthew Lewis, of Louisa, was just four years old, his parents divorced and he lost all contact with his father, Leo.

After receiving his birth certificate revealing the full name of his long-lost-father, Matthew and his wife Renee spent over five years searching for him.

In 2012, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, Matthew was baptized. The very next day, after years of searching and hitting brick walls, Renee found an obituary of Matthew’s grandfather who had just passed away. The obituary listed the name of Matthew’s father and other relatives.

“It was a blessing from God,” Renee said.

Taking the names from the obituary, Renee began the painstaking process of trying to locate the phone number of at least one of the relatives.  She finally obtained the number of Matthew’s great-aunt, Bernice Pembelton, who lived in Ohio. From there, Renee spoke to Matthew’s aunt Debbie Garrison, who also resided in Ohio.

Garrison provided Renee with information about the family and the number with which to contact Matthew’s father. By the time the call ended, both were in tears of happiness.
