Louisa runners race for a district title

Three members of the Louisa County High School cross country team have secured all-district honors.

Sarah Seay, Dillon Nelson and Braden Wood all earned finishes among the top 15 individual runners at the Jefferson District championship meet on Oct. 25. The Lions competed against athletes from Albemarle, Fluvanna, Charlottesville, Powhatan, Monticello and Western Albemarle high schools.

In the girls’ race, Seay led the Lions placing sixth with a time of 20 minutes, 32 seconds. Alayna Campbell was the next Lion runner across the line, finishing 18th with a time of 21:27.

Katelyn Wilson (23rd), Sydney Madison (35th) and Breeana Wilson (37th) rounded out Louisa’s team score with respective times of 21:43, 23:05 and 23:20. Karli Taylor (24:00) and Rachel Cleal (26:39) also competed for the Lions.

Louisa scored 119 points for a fifth place finish. Fluvanna County’s team won the championship meet with a score of 47, edging out Western Albemarle by one point.

In the boys’ race, Nelson placed fourth with a time of 17:20, followed by Wood in 12th place (17:57).

Everett Robinson (18:27), Carryk Bhattal (18:41) and Kyler Soriano (18:51) rounded out the team score with respective 23rd, 28th and 31st place finishes. Bowen Varney (18:57) and Matt Klapak (18:58) also competed for Louisa.

The Lions earned a team score of 94 and placed third in team competition. Western Albemarle won the Jefferson District title with a score of 24, followed by Albemarle with 49.

“We are looking to improve the overall team performance at the regional meet,” Lions’ head coach Jerry Cutright said.

The Lions head to Belvedere Plantation in Fredericksburg on Thursday, Nov. 2, for the Region 4B championship meet. The top three teams, along with the top five individual runners among non-qualifying teams, will advance to the Virginia High School League Class 4 championship meet on Nov. 10-11.
