Louisa track rolls at Regionals

Seven members of the girls outdoor track team and five from the boys outdoor track team will have their bags packed and ready  to go for the bus ride to the VHSL State Championships on Friday and Saturday at Harrisonburg High School.

The honor was bestowed on the athletes based on their superior performances at the Region 4A North meet on Friday, May 30. Louisa’s boys team finished fourth of 26 participating teams, while the girls brought home 15th place.

“We had a good day,” head coach Jerry Cutright said. “We’re pretty pleased.”

As has been the case all season long, senior Raeshawn Bishop had another outstanding performance for the Lions. Of the team’s 41 points, Bishop was involved in 37 of them. He took first place in the triple jump (46’03’’) and the long jump (21’01”), second in the high jump (6’02”) and third in the 300-meter hurdles (40.24).

“He’s doing really well down the stretch,” Cutright said of Bishop’s performance. “We’re hoping he can continue to keep it going for a couple more weeks.”

Bishop will be joined in his trip to the state championships by teammates Josh Grady, Ricky Langhorne and Josh Bishop. Entering the final heat of the 4 x 400-meter relay race seeded tenth, the group took sixth place with a time of 3:31.86.

Markel Groomes rounded out the scoring for Louisa in the 100-meter hurdles, finishing with a time of 15.85. While good enough for seventh place, Groomes’ effort fell just short of qualifying for states.

Not to be left out, the girl’s 4 x 100-meter relay team also performed well enough to continue their season. Comprised of Shadelle Gregory, Aaliyah Clark, Kavia Terry and Brandy Brown, the team finished in fourth place with a time of 50.67, just half a second behind first-place E.C. Glass.
