It’s parade time in Mineral and the annual event will step off down Mineral Avenue at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, May 8 featuring fire and emergency response apparatus, marching units, horses, antique and modern vehicles and business entries.
The annual carnival will continue through Saturday night with the Miss Mineral Flame beauty contest held tonight at 7 p.m. upstairs in the fire hall. Admission to the beauty contest is $1 for adults and 50 cents for children 12 and younger at the front gate.
Winners will be chosen in seven categories with young ladies from six months through 19 years old participating. The winners will have the opportunity to ride in the parade Friday night.
Typical fair food, including corn dogs, French fries, hamburgers and cheeseburgers will be available on the lot as well as other confections such as cotton candy and candied apples.
Arm bands for unlimited rides will be available each night as well as individual ride tickets and sheets of tickets for multiple rides.
To enter the parade, contact Irene at (540) 894-7993 or firstname.lastname@example.org. The deadline for entering is noon on Friday and line up begins at 5:30 p.m. along Mineral Avenue. Trophies will be awarded on the fair lot at approximately 9 p.m. in both fire and EMS as well as non-fire categories.
There are activities planned at facilities along the parade route so participants in those events are reminded that Mineral Avenue will be closed during the parade as well as access to First Street at the intersection of Louisa Avenue and Fifth Street at Miller’s Market.
The carnival is one of the major fund raisers for the Mineral Volunteer Fire Department and proceeds are used to maintain the fire apparatus and facilities at the fire department.
