The town of Mineral has taken its first steps toward purchasing property adjacent to the town office.
The council approved at its May 14 meeting a draft contract to purchase three lots, collectively measuring 100 feet by 75 feet, next to the town office on Mineral Avenue for $53,000.
The contract will be reviewed by both the town and the property’s owner, Samuel Hunter, before further steps are taken.
“This is something we’ve wanted to do for quite a while,” Town Manager Sal Luciano said. “It’s basically a vacant property and is a bit of an eyesore.”
The plan is to use the lot to extend the parking lot for the town office and DMV.
“Things can get pretty crowded when our lot gets full,” Luciano said.
The property, formerly home to a used car lot run by Bob Seaberry, is currently unoccupied and contains an empty trailer situated on a cracked asphalt parking lot.
If the sale occurs, the town would be responsible for the removal of the trailer and any other repairs needed to the lot.
