Griffin Harper, owner of Harper Services, cuts the ribbon to celebrate his firm’s new location on Davis Highway (Rt. 22), east of the town of Louisa on March 17. He is flanked by his wife Mary (at left), colleagues and friends.

Griffin Harper started his career as an electrician by chance. The Louisa native needed a job, and Lakeside Electric was hiring.

That was 17 years ago. Six years after Harper Services was founded, its owner cut the ribbon to celebrate a new home for his company on Davis Highway (Rte. 22).

Harper, 36, and his wife, Mary, have leased a building from Wayne’s Heating and Cooling owner David Fields. Most of the building houses the company’s equipment and vehicle fleet, with a small portion set aside for offices. The company has four staff, not including the Harpers.

Along the way to building his business, Harper gained skills in the construction trade.

“It’s just something we picked up, from hearing people complain they can never find someone,” he said. “It helps fill in some of the slow times, to help pay the bills.”

Harper’s clients are distributed throughout Central Virginia, though he has a substantial list of customers in Louisa. Many are clients who had minor electrical work that needed to be done.

“It’s the small ones that have kept us in business,” he said.
