Diane B. Davis

Diane Elaine Beale Davis, 69, of Keswick, died peacefully on November 23, 2012, after a long battle with rheumatoid arthritis.

Diane was born in Portland, Maine, where she graduated from Deering High School. After moving to Virginia, she received her BA degree in fine arts from Virginia Commonwealth University. Diane then began her interior design business, Beale Davis, Inc. (BDI) where she designed office spaces for companies in the Richmond metropolitan area. An avid animal lover, Diane adopted many homeless pets over the years.

She is survived by her husband, Charles; her children, Lynn Davis, Benjamin Davis, Scott Davis, Brentwood Davis, Heather Kahn and Jennifer Tenda; her grandchildren, Peter Davis, Olivia Davis, Marc Davis, Hunter Davis and Erin Kahn; her great-grandson, Garrison Risley, her parents, Keith and Ruth Beale; her brothers, Keith Beale, Ross Beale, Daniel Beale and James Beale as well as her nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her brother, David; and granddaughter, Samantha.

Per Diane’s request, private services will be held.

Minnie H. Franklin 

Minnie Pearl Hairfield Franklin, 69, of Mineral, passed away peacefully at Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville, after a courageous battle with cancer on Monday, November 19, 2012.

She was born on February 4, 1943 to the late Luther Curtis Hairfield and Cora Woolfrey Glass of Mineral.

She is survived by her children, Paula Carpenter and her husband, Don, John Franklin and his wife, Elizabeth, both of Lake Anna, Keith Franklin and his wife, Pam, of Mechanicsville, and James Franklin of Phoenix, Arizona; her 13 grandchildren, Michael, Jonathan, Mikayla, Brandon, Timothy, Ashley, Adam, Christopher, Davis, Jack, Carter, Reiley, Cabell; and two great-granddaughters, Kiley and Shelby; all of whom she dearly loved. She is also survived by four sisters, Essie Gordon of Richmond, Mary Traynham and her husband, Thomas, of Spotsylvania, Doris Meeks of Louisa, and Nancy Richardson of Mineral, and a host of numerous nieces and nephews, including a special devoted niece Tina Hairfield Peyton.

She was preceded in death by her life partner of 33 years, Vernon Pendergrass; three brothers, Harry Judd Hairfield, William Thomas Hairfield, Van Monroe Hairfield; and two sisters, Nora Louise Seay and Ann Elizabeth Glass.

Minnie was a devoted partner, dedicated mother, sister, aunt, and fun-loving grandmother.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at Woodward Funeral Home. Burial was in Spring Grove Cemetery, Mineral.

Marjorie S. Green

Marjorie Mae Sharp Green, 91, of Scottsville, formerly of Louisa, passed away Saturday, November 24, 2012.

She loved her family, playing guitar, singing, drawing, motorcycles, all animals and she loved to party. She once rode with a friend on a Harley to Florida in the early 1940s.

She is the widow of her beloved John Durfie Green.

She leaves to cherish her memory two special friends, Karen Bercaw and Bradley Barker; her dog, Brownie; and her many friends at Friendly Oaks Clubhouse in Mineral.

A graveside service, conducted by the Rev. Sidney Craig, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Louisa.

Arragements are being made by Woodward Funeral Home, Louisa.

Dennis K. Groome

Dennis Kirk Groome, 47, of Gordonsville died Sunday November 25, 2012 at his residence. Born July 26, 1965 in Richmond, he was a son of James Nolan Groome and Betty Birkhead Groome of Gordonsville. Denny was loved by all of his family and friends and will be greatly missed.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Barry Scott Groome and his wife, Crystal, James Todd Groome and his wife, Kim, all of Gordonsville; four aunts, three uncles, devoted nieces and nephew, Brandy, Caroline, Amber, Bridgitte and Dylan; and a host of loving cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Eva and Robert Groome and Beatrice and Charles Birkhead; three aunts and seven uncles.

A memorial service, conducted by Chaplin Greg Compton and George Hanks, will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29 at Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Judy M. Harrell

Judy Marie Harrell 60 of Bumpass died Saturday, November 17, 2012 in the Univ. of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. She was born February 12, 1952 in Richmond and was a daughter of the late Vernon Linwood St. John and Mae Bell Henley St. John.

Mrs. Harrell is survived by her husband, Jimmy Clyde Harrell of Bumpass, two daughters, Melissa Jackson of Bumpass and Tammy Billings and husband, Scott of Chesterfield, two sons, Jimmy Linwood Harrell of Midlothian and Timmy Allen Harrell of Bumpass, one brother, Buford St. John of Bumpass, four sisters, Brenda Miles of Bumpass, Carol Setzer of Chesterfield, Linda Nixon of Powhatan and Debbie Loney of Midlothian and eleven grandchildren, Heidi Jackson, Shaniya Jackson, Indiona Jackson, Deago Jackson, Bryona Jackson, Angle Setzer, Camden Stotley, Jr., Payson Statler, Katcheonna Jackson, Jeremiah Jackson and Taylor Witherspoon.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, November 23, 2012 at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville with interment in Spring Grove Cemetery in Mineral. Pastor Steve Huffman officiated. The family received friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon at the funeral home prior to the funeral  service.


Loretta Henson 

Loretta Henson, 80, of Mineral, died Thursday, November 22, 2012, at her residence.

Loretta was the daughter of the late Gerald Gray and Ida Crawley. Loretta was born on Nov. 28, 1931 in the Province of Nova Scotia. After spending her childhood years in Canada, she came to the United States while serving as an aid to a United States government official. While in Washington, DC, she met and married Clarence R. Henson Sr. To this union one daughter and five sons were born.

Loretta faithfully attended Rising Sun Baptist Church until her health did not permit. She loved attending Bible study on Wednesday evenings.

Loretta’s employment consisted of Louisa Manufacturing where many lasting bonds began forming, Woolfolk Manufacturing and Louisa Rehabilitation Center.

She was predeceased by her parents and her husband, Clarence R. Henson Sr.

She leaves to cherish her memories her daughter, Darlene Thelma Henson of Mineral; her five sons, Clarence R. Henson Jr. of Mineral, Gregory L. Henson of Fort Washington, Maryland, Jerome M. Henson (Bernadine) of Fredericksburg, Brian M. Henson (Yvonne) of Fredericksburg and Anthony C. Henson of Louisa; one sister, Joan Crawley of Toronto, Ontario, Canada; one sister-in-law, Dorothy A. Henson of Mineral; nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. The family also recognizes two devoted cousins, Leroy and Joseph Sawyer and one devoted nephew, James Henson.

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Fred Sales, were held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Rising Sun Baptist Church Mineral. Interment was in the Henson family cemetery.

Draone D. Johnson 

Draone Dontae Johnson, 23, of Louisa, departed this life suddenly Saturday, November 24, 2012, at the University of Virginia Medical Center, Charlottesville, as the result of an automobile accident.

Draone is survived by his two sons, Mekia Shelton and Natrevon Johnson, both of Louisa; his parents, James Johnson of Richmond and Belinda Davis Johnson of Louisa; one sister, Jasmine Johnson of Richmond; two brothers, Keyon Johnson and James Johnson, both of Louisa.

Funeral services, conducted by Pastor Barry Carpenter and Elder Steven Mason, Eulogist, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, at Laurel Hill Baptist Church, Kentucky Springs Rd., Mineral. Interment will follow in the Johnson Family Cemetery on Rt. 700, Mineral. Viewing will held at the funeral home on Friday, Nov. 30 from 12 until 8 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10 until 11 a.m.

Louvinia H. Johnson 

Louvinia Octavia Haskins Johnson, 90, of Mineral, died on Monday, November 19, 2012, at Fort Washington Hospital in Fort Washington, Maryland.

Born Thursday, March 30, 1922 in Louisa, she was the daughter of the late Marvin Haskins and Elminor Smith Haskins. She was the wife of the late William H. Johnson Sr. She was also preceded in death by her son, William H. Johnson Jr.

She was employed by Louisa County Public Schools.

Surviving are her sons, Alfred W. Johnson, Charles E. Johnson, Calvin Johnson and Marvin Johnson; and one daughter, Frances M. Lindsay.

Funeral services, conducted by Elder Lynn W. Beanum Jr., were held at 12 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, at Temple of Deliverance HCOG, Mineral. Burial followed with a committal service at the True Apostolic Church Cemetery, Mineral.

Arrangements were made by Thomasson Watson Funeral Service, Inc., Louisa.

Clarence E. Maddra Jr.

Clarence Eldridge Maddra Jr., 87, of Louisa died Monday November 19, 2012 in the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville. He was born November 1, 1925 in Louisa County and was a son of the late Clarence Eldridge Maddra Sr. and Ella Mildred Baker McGreen.

Mr. Maddra is survived by his wife, Mary Lee Maddra of Louisa, one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Corbi and husband, Murray of Louisa, two sons, Jeffery Wayne Maddra Sr. and wife, Sharon of Louisa and John Howard Maddra and wife, Andrea of Harrisonburg, one brother, Charles Baker Maddra of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, five grandchildren, Jeffery Wayne Maddra Jr., Jessica Leigh Maddra, Jordan Matthew Maddra, Jillian Paige Maddra and Brandon Robert Corbi. He was also preceded in death by three sisters,Mildred Davies, June Ide and Elizabeth Ann “Tootsie” Shackner.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, November 24, 2012 at the Preddy Funeral Home Chapel in Gordonsville with interment in Hillcrest Cemetery. The Rev. Denny Burnette will officiate. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, November 23, 2012 from 6 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home.


Susan U. Milton

Susan Utz Milton, 73, of Mineral, died Monday, November 26, 2012, at her home.

Born February 13, 1939 in Charlottesville, she was a daughter of the late Robert Lester Utz and Evelyn May Wiltshire Utz. Mrs. Milton was the wife of the late James Thomas Milton.  She was a member of Church of Incarnation in Mineral, a founding and charter member of the Montpelier Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution, a member of the Mineral Fire Department Auxiliary and a member of the United Daughter of the Confederacy.

She is survived by three daughters, Anne Harding and her husband, Walt, of Richmond, Malinda Milton Cantey of Germantown, Maryland, Beth Milton Humphries and her husband, Robert, of Rockville; three sons, Timothy Utz Milton and his wife, Susan, of Keswick, James Franklin Milton II and his wife, Erin, of Richmond, Robert Jonathan Milton and his wife, Andrea, of Franklin, West Virginia; 14 grandchildren, Alexander Milton, Alissa Perdue, Riley Lee-Evans, Jonathan Humphries, Harry Cantey, Samantha Lee-Evans, Benjamin Humphries, Mary Milton, Macy Harding, Andrew Milton, Jacob Milton, Brenton Milton, Makayla Milton and Carter Milton.

Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Marian Windel, Vicar, will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29 at Church of the Incarnation in Mineral. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery in Gordonsville.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M. on Wednesday evening, November 28, 2012 at the Preddy Funeral Home in Gordonsville.

Memorial contributions may be made to Church of Incarnation, 102 Louisa Avenue, Mineral, VA 23117.

Preston Powell Jr.

Preston Powell Jr., 75, of Louisa County, died Saturday, November 24, 2012.

He is survived by his children, Preston Powell III (Marian), Debbie McKinney (Chuck), Theresa Wood (Mike), Stephanie Bartol (Mark); 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his sister, Joyce Harris; his brothers; Wayne (Ann) and Tommy (Judy).
