Grymes students received a treat from their Grymes Parent Teacher Association in the form of a Giant Traveling Map of North America from National Geographic.
The map brings geography home in a “big” way for students. This 26’ x 35’ map lives in the Grymes gym, taking up most of the floor space for two weeks during which time students traverse the continent from Alaska’s Aleutian Islands to the Panama Canal and from Iceland to Baja.
The map comes with a trunk of rich activities, games, props and educational resources. Students use their bodies to represent physical features, go on a westward journey to track population growth, and play an action-packed game of “Simon Says.”
The Grymes sixth grade students located tributaries and explored major watersheds of the continent. They are preparing to conduct a water quality study this spring to test water in a nearby creek. The map also provides an excellent opportunity to “see” things on a larger scale.
