Grace Lay, a fifth-grade student at Trevilians Elementary School, became Louisa County’s two-time spelling bee champion on Jan. 28.
Lay correctly spelled the championship word, “cognition,” after more than 10 rounds of competition with nearly 30 of Louisa’s best spellers in grades 3 through 8. Josh Main, Moss-Nuckols Elementary School fifth-grader, was the runner-up.
Barbara Wilson was the pronouncer for the bee, held at the Louisa County Middle School Forum, and judges were Judy Havasy, Larry Lewis and Jackie Lichtman.
Lay, who also won the LCPS bee in 2013 as a fourth grader, will compete in the Richmond Times-Dispatch’s regional bee, to be held in March at the Library of Virginia.
