You can buy a specialty license plate in Virginia that shows support of a favorite sports team, college, veterans and various military branches. There are those that support animals or call attention to medical conditions. There is even one for the Friends of Tibet.
But the one plate you won’t find in the nearly 250 offered by the Department of Motor Vehicles is one that supports teachers. Louisa’s representative in the House of Delegates wants to change that.
Del. John McGuire, 56th District representative, hopes that he can accumulate at least 450 commitments from Virginians by the Jan. 8 deadline for a license plate that will honor Virginia’s teachers.
“Almost everyone out there has had a teacher who impacted them in a special way,” he said.
McGuire, who will begin his second year in the Virginia General Assembly, reached out to Louisa County Public Schools to seek their support and asked them to design the plate.
“We immediately jumped on it,” Superintendent Doug Straley said. “The school board supported it.”
The design, a creation by Andrew Woolfolk, the school division’s public information officer, incorporates a school-bus yellow ruler and an apple, with the words “Virginia loves teachers.”
McGuire said that he believes the teaching profession is often under-appreciated.
