To the Editor:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the members of the Santa Council for everything they do in our community.
For those of you who are not familiar with the Santa Council, they are a local non-profit organization devoted to providing food, toys, books and clothing for less fortunate families in Louisa County. As Christmas Day drew closer, the Santa Council spent the majority of their time packing food into care packages, wrapping presents and delivering packages to families in need. I admire all the work and time the Santa Council volunteers have devoted to this cause and I am proud to have taken part in some of their activities.
As a student at Louisa County High School and an athlete participating in advanced physical education, our teacher John Meeks received permission for his classes to take part in volunteering with the Santa Council for those students not taking SOLs. At first, I was apprehensive about volunteering and I did not want to go, but I made a last minute decision to go ahead and participate.
The next day, we arrived at Mineral Baptist Church and we [Meeks’s gym class] were placed in charge of putting boxes together, marking them with a letter to represent what was to be put in the boxes, stacking the boxes in neat lines and packing them with a certain amount of food. I thoroughly enjoyed the work that was accomplished in the first day and I was amazed by how just a few more helping hands could make such a difference in the workload. By our second and final trip to help the Santa Council, I couldn’t wait to start working again. Our second day volunteering was dedicated to delivering food packages for those in need and I was deeply touched by the look of excitement on these people’s faces. This is when I realized just how great an impact the Santa Council is having on our community.
Thanks to the Santa Council, I have developed a desire to become more involved in community service activities and there’s no doubt that I will be volunteering with the Santa Council again next year.
I would like to encourage everyone to participate with the Santa Council whether it be through volunteering or donating to the Santa Council’s “Adopt-A-Family” gift drive.
