While they may be done with classwork for the summer, children in Louisa County can still get their school lunches. And they don’t have to be enrolled in the public schools.
Louisa County Public Schools’ Community Meals program kicked off for the summer on June 13 and continues until July 28, Monday through Thursday. This year lunch is being served at all six schools and five other sites. The hours at each location vary (see below).
The schools started the community meals program in 2017 and have slowly expanded service since then. They had a box truck at first to carry food to a few locations; later they used a grant from the nonprofit No Kid Hungry campaign to buy a trailer, enabling them to extend their reach. Community sites now include neighborhoods like Six-O-Five Village and destinations such as Louisa Town Hall Park.
Unlike in 2020 and 2021, the schools are giving out lunches to children aged 2 to 18, but not other meals. They were able to do that during the peak of the Covid pandemic, but now federal regulations have shifted the schools back to where they were in 2019.
“For the last two years we’ve been giving families a week’s worth of meals,” said Randy Herman, who heads the schools’ nutrition program. “You didn’t have to have your children with you.”
The schools also delivered meals to hundreds of families’ homes during the pandemic, since many children were not attending school in person.
“I think people got used to that. We became [like] Meals on Wheels. I would do it again, but the guidelines don’t allow me to,” Herman said.
Beyond the familiar school fare, fresh food from local farms is available at some sites and through a collaboration with Louisa County Resource Council. Charlottesville-based Local Food Hub was scheduled to bring fresh produce to Jouett Elementary School yesterday.
On certain days, when visitors come to pick up their meals, they can also take part in STEAM activities, using laptop computers and Wifi access provided by the schools’ technology staff. Free books are available, too. In addition, the Louisa Arts Center mobile bus travels to some sites.
