From Louisa County's past: Sept. 23, 2021

This photograph of an old, hand-hewn dugout canoe appeared on the cover of The Central Virginian in September 1981. It was pulled from the mud of the South Anna River and was said to be hundreds of years old. At about 19 inches in width, it was too small for a person to sit in. The photo caption noted that in the county’s early days, the river would have been the fastest way to travel.
