Every month, members of the Louisa Lions varsity football team visit one of the four local elementary schools to spend time with school children. Landon Wilson, Qwenton Spellman and Takai Comfort were three members of the team who attended Trevilians Elementary School recently to read to the children, exchange personal stories, and let them try on their football jerseys. Â
The young students were visibly excited to hang out with the players and eager to show off some of their talents as well. The students held nothing back and were ecstatic to present several impersonations and dance moves.
Although it obviously meant a lot to the kids, it also meant equally as much to the players.
“Having conversation with them and reading to them doesn’t only make their day, it also makes mine,” said Landon Wilson. “ Kids knowing me by name...knowing that I’m the quarterback and asking for my autograph is something that I cherish greatly...it makes me feel like I made a positive impact on the community.” Â
Among some of the favorite books that were read for the kids were “Roaring Rockets,” by Tony Mitton, and “Be Brave Little Penguin,” by Giles Andreae.
The Lions will continue visiting elementary school children for the remainder of the school year to connect with the youth and be positive role models within the community.
In the Future Farmers of America program, students participate in various events involving community service, leadership, competitions and fundraisers.
