Greetings from your Louisa County Commission on Aging. You might know us as the group that holds a holiday dinner for seniors each December. Or perhaps you have a copy of The Little Yellow Book, our publication listing useful phone numbers. Our job is to identify the needs of older residents in our community. We report these findings to the Louisa County Board of Supervisors to help them make decisions that enhance the lives of seniors. We meet at 10 a.m. the first Wednesday of each month at the Betty J. Queen Intergenerational Center. All of you are welcome to join us. Read more

Here it is, May at last, and the time the poet says is for flowers. We have flowers aplenty and they are lovely, and maybe worth enduring that miserable winter, but we also have unending pollen and itchy eyes, and grass to cut, and a host of unpleasant things that make me ask if flowery Maytime is worth it. April’s last morning and May’s first will have the two brightest planets so close together in the pre-dawn sky as to look like one very bright “star.” They are actually about 450 million miles apart and binoculars or a telescope will separate them into the brighter but smaller Venus and larger but dimmer Jupiter. Hope for cloud-free views of the southeast sky at least one morning; yes, this late sleeper will be up to check it out. Read more

Ahh, the weather. With the unpredictable movement of our spring temperatures, we’re kept wondering about our plants. Will my newly emerging daffodils be damaged by the snow tonight? All the flowers on my Star Magnolia turned brown when it froze last night – does that mean the tree is damaged? All the leaves are opening on my rose – it must be too early! Read more

This morning, I climbed out of bed and turned on the TV. Then I grabbed a couple of doughnuts and a glass of milk, and sat there in my comfortable recliner. Later on, when I climbed into the driver’s seat in my car, I noticed that I’d fastened my seat belt, without even thinking about it. That afternoon, I found myself putting on my jogging shoes, and heading out for the trail. Why am I doing these things? Did they just “happen?”  Read more

Every so often, I tell Rick, “I have an idea.” According to my husband, these simple words give him cold chills. You see, Rick is a man who loves his daily routine. He enjoys knowing what to expect and changes are not, shall we say, welcomed with open arms. Am I about to tell him that I want to host an event in our home, go visit my mother, or move the furniture around? He doesn’t know what’s coming, but he is always confident that his routine is about to be rocked in one way or another. Read more
