To the Editor:
On Jan. 29, President Trump signed the United States Mexico Canada Agreement, which replaces the North American Free Trade Agreement. It’s not perfect. Both sides have issues with it, but they came together and got the job done.
Our Congresswoman, Abigail Spanberger, joined with Republicans and Democrats to pass the USMCA in the House. Earlier she met with several colleagues and Vice President Mike Pence in a bipartisan effort to work out the details. There were people on both sides who voted against it for various reasons, but she was able to bring enough people together to pass this measure.
Without this agreement in place to enable duty-free trade between the U.S., Mexico and Canada, farmers and manufacturers faced uncertainty about markets for their goods. Having it in place, even though it is imperfect, will instill confidence in the markets and help to bring prosperity to those who have been floundering.
We are lucky to have a Congresswoman who is able to work in this bipartisan fashion, in spite of the bickering that surrounds us. Things that need to be done, get done. Thanks, Abigail!
