To the editor:
There are many people who will believe to their dying day that the 2020 presidential election was illegitimate. In the end, it’s another “big lie,” just like saying that Covid-19 is a hoax. So why do so many continue to cling to these lies?
Joseph Goebbels once said, “Repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth.” With Fox News’ constant repetition, it’s no surprise so many doubt the election’s outcome.
The bigger, the cruder the lie, the easier it is to believe. And there’s no shortage of those willing to be deceived. Certain that the end justifies the means, believing a lie designed to limit voting, ensuring a minority can win elections.
It’s why so many red states are passing laws to restrict voting. Nor does the big lie stop at justifying voter suppression. It’s intended to make people believe that their vote doesn’t matter.
The big lie is not just about voting in the midterms and 2024. Its purpose is to create the illusion of truth, to redefine reality. To convince people that voting is pointless.
Once it gains a foothold, either you accept all of it, or everything collapses. Like the Soviet Union did.
With so much disinformation flying around, it’s no surprise people believe some strange things. To be clear, we’re not talking about something harmless like Elvis is alive.
We’re talking bat guano crazy, like Biden wants to make us all drink plant-based beer.
These are narratives that appeal to those who prefer to see the world in black and white. Where tribal loyalties shape their reality and every issue becomes a choice between good and evil. It makes it easy to lose track of how much tribal thinking shapes our society and politics.
In their view, Democratic notions are the socially deviant ones. This is a cultural split which Republicans have exploited since the days of the robber barons.
With one party no longer interested in governing, we have endless “culture wars,” designed to salt the earth for the next tyrant they dig out of the ooze.
Whether they are aware of Goebbels’ observation that the big lie can only be maintained as long as the people are shielded from the consequences of the lie is beside the point.
What matters is that this administration is dedicated to moving the country forward in D, not R, while the other party wants to push more big lies.
