To the Editor:

The Salvation Army’s Christmas kettles have been stored away for another year, but the work of all the donated coins and bills that were contributed to the 2019 kettle drive is just beginning.  The generous outpouring of donations from the Louisa community once again will allow our local Salvation Army unit to help meet the needs of our neighbors who find themselves in an unexpected crisis.

Thank you to everyone who opened their hearts and wallets to deposit dollars and coins in our kettles at Walmart and the Food Lion stores in Louisa County.

And thank you to everyone who wrote a check to the Louisa Unit and dropped it in the mail or kettle. Every penny, every dollar and every check will be used by The Salvation Army to “do the most good” throughout the coming year.

Each kettle drive season brings stories of generosity and sacrifice, and the 2019 kettle drive had two special donations.

A mother and her son stopped by a kettle, relaying to our volunteer bell-ringer how our Louisa Unit helped them get through a family emergency during the past year. They were so grateful for the assistance that they wanted to make a donation to the kettle so that others in crisis also could be helped by our local Salvation Army.

Another donation was too large to fit in the kettle. A very young member of our community must have spent months collecting coins, placing them in a jar labeled “Christmas Jar,” perhaps inspired by the book or movie by the same name. His diligence and generosity very likely generated one of the largest single contributions made to our kettles this year – over $28!

Inside the jar’s lid was a message: “John 3:16: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believeth in Him shall not die but have everlasting life”—the true meaning of Christmas and the reason that The Salvation Army does what it does all year.

It’s not too late to contribute to the kettle drive. Make a tax-deductible donation by mailing a check to The Salvation Army, Louisa Unit, 1009 Mt. Airy Road, Louisa, VA 23093.

Thank you once again, Louisa community, for your generosity!
