State Del. Nick Freitas will challenge Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger in November's election for her seat representing the 7th District, including Louisa County.
Freitas, of Culpeper, emerged as the Republican nominee at 8:30 p.m. on July 18 after three rounds of voting by delegates at the convention at the Meadow Event Park in Caroline County, according to published reports. Freitas won 56 percent of the votes in the final round.
He survived strong competition from fellow Delegate John McGuire, who was second to Freitas in fundraising during the campaign. McGuire and Freitas were the last candidates standing after the second round of voting. Tina Ramirez threw her support to McGuire, while Andrew Knaggs backed Freitas.
In the second round of voting, Freitas received 46 percent of the delegates' votes, while McGuire took 25 percent and Ramirez, 24.5 percent.
