Louisa man guilty of gang-related break-in

A man pleaded guilty on Aug. 26 to breaking into a Buckner Road house to end his gang membership.

Keith Saunders-Mallory, 18, of Bumpass, was arrested the day after he burglarized the home on May 9. He entered guilty pleas in Louisa Circuit Court to charges of burglary with intent to commit robbery and street gang participation.

The homeowner fired birdshot at the intruder, striking him in the buttocks. Saunders-Mallory was treated for his injury at a Richmond-area hospital. He was then taken to Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange.

Saunders-Mallory told detectives he had been a member of a subset of the Bloods gang. He said other gang members told him to break into the house if he wanted to get out of the gang.

“The defendant is lucky the victim only had bird shot in his shotgun," said Rusty McGuire, Louisa County Commonwealth's Attorney.

Sentencing in the case is scheduled for Oct. 31.
